VetSafe Mastery follows on from our VetSafe Essentials course, so we recommend you complete the Essentials course first. It’s available via the VetSafe website here, and is included in VetSafe access for VDS members.

VetSafe Mastery is for those who want to lead Quality Improvement (QI) and champion learning in their practice. Designed for VetSafe Champions, clinical governance leads or those interested in leading QI, this course helps you translate your VetSafe reports into meaningful, sustainable change.

You’ll develop practical skills for reviewing events, facilitating learning reviews and supporting colleagues after difficult incidents. VetSafe Mastery goes deeper into team dynamics and culture, covering Root Cause Analysis, the concept of the second victim, barriers to reporting, Safety Culture, Just Culture, and how to create a psychological safe workplace so that colleagues can learn and improve.

This course is suitable for VetSafe Champions, clinical governance leads or anyone responsible for leading learning and improvement in practice.

  • How to use Root Cause Analysis technique to review a VetSafe report
  • Confidence in preparing for, facilitating and leading a learning review
  • Understand the term 'second victim' and how the VetSafe report/review process can help support clinicians
  • Support in debriefing after adverse events and signposting relevant resources
  • Understand barriers to event reporting, what Safety Culture is and principles of creating a 'Just Culture'
  • Understand the concept of Psychological Safety, how it relates to learning from adverse events and feel confident in steps you can take to build it within your team.
