Sleep Matters

Do you know how your waking activities affect your sleep?

Do you understand how sleep affects you and your team’s performance?

Would you like to gain some practical tools to improve your sleep health?

Trying to balance working to a high standard, managing everyone's expectations (including your own) and getting everything done can feel exhausting.

Exhaustion can lead to mistakes, lack of reward and enjoyment of our role in veterinary practice as well as life in general. One of the fundamental ways that we replenish our physical, emotional and cognitive energy is through the process of sleep.

Getting a better quality of sleep can improve your health productivity, performance and happiness. That is why elite athletes make sleep health a priority. Yet so many of us regard sleep as an inconvenient part of our day, an add on or a ‘nice to have’ rather than an essential. That is until staying asleep becomes an issue...

How does your sleep score?

To get an idea of just how well you are currently sleeping, SATED is a simple questionnaire developed by sleep researchers to determine the degree of your sleep fulfilment. The SATED sleep questionnaire asks you to score various aspects of your sleep to give you a measure of your sleep fulfilment. It highlights key areas for improvement and forms a baseline to measure from as you make changes and improvements.

Take some time to fill in this questionnaire. It was developed and proposed by Daniel Buysse (2014) and is widely used and recognised by the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a means of self-reporting sleep fulfilment and has been used in over 150 peer reviewed papers and studies.

What is your SATED score out of 10? How does this reflect your sleep fulfilment at this time?

What aspects of your sleep fulfilment are best and worst?

Are there any patterns or key areas for improvement?

What key aspect would bring the most improvement to your sleep health? If you could address this, what would it mean for you?

If you're interested in learning more about your sleep health and ways to improve it, you can join neuroscientist Iain Price on our NEW course Healthy Sleep, starting Wednesday 11 May 2022, a modular online programme combined with group coaching sessions offering 7 hours CPD, for anyone working in veterinary practice.

NEW Healthy Sleep Programme from VDS Training

What does the programme involve?

Contributing 7 hours towards your annual CPD, this course will help you to press pause and to reflect on what's working, what's not working and what needs to change. You'll get clarity on what sleep actually is, dispelling some old myths along the way, as well as learn how to make sleep habits work for you in your world.

This course is facilitated by Dr Iain Price, a neuroscientist, trainer and coach with a love of science and communication. He combines his own personal experiences with his professional expertise and knowledge to help you help yourself when it comes to improving the quality of your sleep.

Healthy Sleep is a five step programme that consists of three online learning modules, delivered through an online learning platform. Each module includes a series of short videos, an exercise and a one-hour group coaching session.

Join Iain for a regular group coaching session to reflect on each of the areas you’ll learn about on the course and how to embed habits that encourage healthy sleep, supported by Iain and alongside colleagues from the profession.
